Popularly known as Knights Templars, they began their existence as “The Poor Fellow-Soldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon”, were in reality not so poor by any measure. As a Catholic military order founded in the year 1119 CE, in the immediate aftermath of the First Crusade, they had all the trappings of a bank and are considered to be the first corporate bank, who played a key role in the development of modern banking.
